This past Monday marked the occasion of the Met Gala, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute benefit party. With a glamorous red carpet and a celebrity count to rival the Oscar's, and with a new theme to influence the gowns each year, the Met Gala is a highly anticipated event in the fashion lover's annual calendar.
This year's party was no disappointment; the theme for 2016 was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. As a result, plenty of Hollywood's brightest attended in metallic frocks in space age silhouettes. While some tended toward the extreme and theatrical (namely, Madonna and Lady Gaga), the majority of starlets and models were elegant and striking in futuristic fashion.
Of particular interest to Ariva was the overwhelming presence of silver at the Gala. From Kim Kardashian to Cindy Crawford, Brie Larson to Kate Upton, silver gowns were a staple of the red carpet. While admittedly these looks are not easy to replicate, nor are they practical for day to day life, incorporating smaller amounts of silver into a wardrobe through jewelry is an excellent way to channel the party's theme; silver jewelry is a fantastic reminder of how the use of technology to manipulate metal for personal adornment plays an integral role in an individual's self expression through fashion.
